MSU falls to No. 9 after upset loss

November 30, 2009

MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo discusses tonight’s game between the No. 9 Spartans and No. 10 North Carolina, as well as a look at the developing rivalry between the Spartans and Tar Heels. The two play at 9 p.m. tonight on ESPN.

The MSU men’s basketball team fell to No. 9 in The Associated Press Top 25 poll Monday, while Kansas remained atop the poll for the third straight week.

Texas replaced the Spartans in the No. 2 slot, followed by Villanova, Purdue and Kentucky. Duke, West Virginia, Syracuse, MSU and North Carolina round out the Top 10.

Florida, which beat the Spartans 77-74 Friday, made the biggest leap, going from unranked to No. 13. The Gators followed their win against MSU with a convincing 73-58 win against Rutgers to clinch the Legends Classic title.

Gonzaga also entered the poll for the first time this season, climbing to No. 17 after posting four wins this week, including big wins against Wisconsin and Cincinnati.

Texas A&M (No. 19), Florida State (No. 21), Cincinnati (No. 22), UNLV (No. 24) and Portland (No. 25) also were new to the poll.

Butler, previously No. 12, saw the biggest drop, falling to No. 23 after losses to Minnesota and Clemson. Michigan, previously No. 15, fell completely out of the rankings, as did Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma.
