Men's soccer team sweeps Big Ten honors

October 19, 2009

For the first time in the history of the MSU men’s soccer program, the Spartans defeated Indiana on Sunday in Bloomington, Ind., winning by a score of 1-0 in double overtime.

And the Spartans were rewarded by the Big Ten — sweeping the conference’s weekly accolades.

Junior midfielder Jeff Ricondo was named the Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute of double overtime. Ricondo recorded a team-high three shots and played the full 102 minutes of Sunday’s match.

After making a season-high eight saves Sunday, junior goalkeeper Avery Steinlage was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week.

The Hoosiers recorded 22 shots in the match, compared to the Spartans’ seven. Sunday’s shutout was Steinlage’s sixth clean sheet of the season and the 19th shutout of his college career.
