Dahlman finally healthy for MSU

October 26, 2009

Isaiah Dahlman is knocking on wood.

And after all the senior guard has been through, who can blame him?

As a freshman in January 2007, Dahlman injured his right foot, missing seven games.

As a sophomore, he played with a bad back, limiting his ability in practice.

Last season, he saw less than two minutes a game, but still managed to hurt his ankle in warm-ups against Penn State on Feb. 1.

This preseason, Dahlman is healthy. His shot is quicker and he’s added weight, which showed during Saturday’s annual Green and White game, when Dahlman scored 18 points, shooting 5-of-8 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point range.

“For the first time, there’s really no bumps and bruises and I hope it stays that way — knock on wood — and it feels great to be healthy,” Dahlman said. “My senior year, I think I’ve really caught up and I’ve been able to battle through the practices and the bumps and the bruises that I’ve normally gotten my freshman through my junior years.”

MSU head coach Tom Izzo said a healthy and stronger Dahlman will have the opportunity to be in the rotation this season.

After the scrimmage, Izzo said Dahlman and sophomore guard Austin Thornton are battling for one of the last rotation spots. One thing that might set Dahlman apart is his ability to play numerous positions.

Dahlman said the biggest thing Izzo has stressed to him during the early weeks of the season is to know each position but center.

Because of MSU’s question mark at center, there might be times when sophomore forwards Delvon Roe and Draymond Green need to shift to center, opening a spot at power forward.

Likewise, with sophomore guard Korie Lucious still rehabbing a foot injury, Dahlman has watched film of the point guard position.

“Isaiah Dahlman is a guy who has had an unbelievable summer and worked his tail off,” Izzo said. “I make no secrets: Is he good enough? I don’t know. But if there’s a guy that deserves to have success, it’s him.”
