As a Chicano/Latino Studies graduate, class of 2001, I demand to know why the recommendations of the advisory committee and the situation with the CLS director have not been resolved. The people have spoken their dissatisfaction with the current director of CLS, Dr. Sheila Contreras, and I’m having a hard time understanding why she hasn’t been removed from her current position.
Why is Dr. Marietta Baba unwilling to work with the students to get this matter resolved?
I cannot stress how much my Chicano/Latino specialization has helped me in my career. As a current resident of Miami, Fla., where the Spanish-speaking population easily surpasses 60 percent, my CLS specialization is almost more valuable than my Bachelor’s degree. The CLS program at MSU is excellent and clearly it needs to be more of a priority.
I will be very upset if Dr. Baba or Dr. Contreras compromise or jeopardize the CLS program in any way — and I will be even more upset if the President of Michigan State University, Lou Anna K. Simon, stands idly by and watches them do it.
