MSU wins $50,000 research grant

April 23, 2009

A collaborative grant awarded Tuesday to MSU will give the university $50,000 to research development in Africa.

The university is one of 20 U.S. colleges and universities to receive funds to address Africa’s environmental and developmental challenges. Three hundred institutions applied for the grant, but MSU and Ohio State are the only two Big Ten schools to receive funding.

Each university is paired with an African educational institution. MSU’s partner is the University of Malawi.

The partnership will focus on issues of development, population growth and climate change that have caused forests, fisheries, soil and water degradation in Malawi.

The universities will work on ways to improve engineering, health, agriculture and other priorities in the continent.

Sylvia Warner, spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Brighton, said MSU has a history of successful efforts with African development projects.

“There’s a considerable amount of work that MSU’s been able to accomplish in terms of international development,” Warner said.
