Arsonist burns garages; students’ cars totaled

Three East Lansing garages were set ablaze early Sunday morning, with two victims losing vehicles in the fire, East Lansing police said.
East Lansing police Lt. Kevin Daley said the fires occurred between 3:30 and 4 a.m. while the occupants of the homes were asleep. He said the victims do not have any relation to one another, leading police to believe the targets were random.
“The garages were open and that caused the suspect to use them,” Daley said.
The first fire was reported at 3:30 a.m. on the 400 block of Grove Street and the next fire was reported at 3:37 a.m. on the 500 block of Gunson Street. The final fire occurred on the 400 block of Division Street and was reported some time between 3:37 a.m. and 4 a.m., but Daley did not have an exact time.
Lyman Briggs physiology senior Arun Nagaraju said he woke up at about 3:47 a.m. when a friend walking by his house called to tell him his garage was on fire. Nagaraju said his car and his roommate’s car were completely totaled, resulting in about $45,000 worth of damage.
“I have no idea how the house didn’t catch on fire, too. The fire was huge,” Nagaraju said.
Police do not yet have an estimate of the cost of damage caused by the arsons.
Daley said police do not have any suspects but believe they are looking for one person or persons who started all three fires.
