Johnny's Lunch closes doors

March 1, 2009

Johnny’s Lunch, 101 E. Grand River Ave., closed its doors last week.

A sign posted on the front door of the hot dog and burger joint read, “Closed until further notice. We thank you for your business and apologize for any inconvenience.”

The restaurant, which opened in November 2007, was one of seven Johnny’s Lunch locations in Michigan, Ohio and New York. The first restaurant was opened in Jamestown, N.Y., in 1936 by “Johnny” Colera. The business began franchising in May 2007, with a headquarters in Toledo. But many students, including mechanical engineering graduate student Alan Katz, said it’s not a big shock to see the restaurant close.

“There’s not that big of a market for that and Sparty’s Coney Island in Frandor already has a monopoly on the market,” he said.
