MSU Department of Residence Life exists to be helpful to students, not make situations worse. I didn’t have confidence in them before; Now I know that they are not an option for me.
Residents prefer for their problems to be solved peacefully and amicably, but with the system ResLife has in place, it is often in the best interest of students to call the police or deal with a situation in a less desirable way.
Since I moved into my apartment in Cherry Lane a year ago, I have complained to my neighbor about the noise level coming from her apartment above me. I consider myself to be a very tolerant person, but there is only so much an individual can handle. After repeatedly asking my neighbor to cease her incessant racket, I had enough.
I turned up my music so that I could focus on doing my homework. My neighbor came down to my apartment to complain and, when I didn’t answer right away, opened the door to my apartment. I was civil and I turned down my music.
I also took this opportunity to explain to her that my music was a reaction to the obscene amount of noise issuing from her apartment on a daily/hourly basis.
After I spoke with my neighbor, I immediately contacted ResLife. No one has a right to enter my apartment without permission, and this issue had gone beyond something that I should have had to deal with alone. Instead of getting the issue resolved, I received a noise violation warning and was told to be patient and have a conversation with my neighbor.
I urge ResLife and its staff to re-evaluate the manner in which they handle resident complaints. Students use their services to get help — not to be penalized.
In the future, I will use a more official way to handle any concerns I may have because I know that ResLife is not competent enough to handle relatively minor issues.
