Cause of deadly crash unknown

February 26, 2009

The investigation into what caused the single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of an MSU student Tuesday afternoon might not conclude for several weeks, Lansing police said Thursday.

Lt. Noel Garcia said police are taking a cautious approach to the investigation of the crash that killed Jeremy Watson, a 21-year-old interdisciplinary studies in social sciences and health studies major.

Watson lost control of his Mercury Mountaineer, collided with the beginning of a guardrail on Cedar Street and plunged into the Red Cedar River. He was pronounced dead at Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital several hours later. An autopsy revealed drowning and extreme hypothermia as causes of death.

Garcia said investigation into the cause of the accident could take weeks, depending on whether toxicology reports are needed. When the vehicle was removed from the river, a tire was flat. It is unknown whether the flat tire contributed to the crash.
