New pizza place postpones opening

December 3, 2008

Students planning to camp out in front of Toppers Pizza, 1219 E. Grand River Ave., to get free food should anticipate an additional two weeks’ wait.

The pizza chain is postponing its originally scheduled opening date from Saturday to Dec. 20 after hiring and financing issues caused delays.

“The students are (going to be) gone, but that’s just the way it worked out,” said Ryan Kaminski, owner of the East Lansing location.

A Wisconsin-based pizza chain, Toppers is opening its first Michigan location in the building previously occupied by Papiano’s Pizza, and has giveaways planned for its first 50 customers.

In a gimmick known as “free food for a year,” the first customers will receive one free item on the menu each week for 52 weeks.
