Visiting faculty member charged

November 3, 2008

A visiting MSU research associate was sentenced Monday to between one and 20 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections for illegal use of the Internet.

Iqbal Munir, from the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, who had been charged with child sexually abusive activity and illegal use of the Internet, was sentenced by Judge Gregory Bill at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice in Detroit.

Munir, 39, was chatting with someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl when he planned a June 6 sexual meeting at an unidentified location in Wayne County.

The nonexistent girl was actually a Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy.

Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Keith Clark declined to comment on the case.

Munir’s attorney, Jon Kaner, could not be reached for comment.
