4 spartans earn league honors

Four MSU athletes were named Big Ten players of the week for their efforts last week.

Football kicker Brett Swenson was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week. He connected on all four of his field goal attempts in MSU’s 25-24 win over Wisconsin on Saturday.

It is the third time he’s won the award this season.

Field hockey sophomore forward Jantine Steinmetz was awarded Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after netting the winning goal against Penn State and assisting on two goals against Central Michigan, . This is the third time she has won the award in her two years at MSU, and the fourth time a field hockey player has been named player of the week this season.

The MSU men’s soccer team clinched two player of the week honors this week to go along with its Big Ten Championship. Senior forward Louis Stephens III was named Offensive Player of the Week for his three-goal performance last week, including the game-winner in Sunday’s game against Northwestern.

Along with Stephens, goalkeeper Avery Steinlage was named co-Defensive Player of the Week, rewarding his two shutouts — a 4-0 win at Bowling Green and the 1-0 victory against Northwestern.
