Council to meet, discuss project

October 6, 2008

The East Lansing City Council will hear a presentation on the city’s Community Development Block Grant and make a decision on part of the West Village project during its meeting tonight.

The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Courtroom 2 of 54-B District Court, 101 Linden St.

“Basically, I’m going to be giving a summary of all the activities funded with the Community Development Block Grant from July ’07 to June ’08,” said Stephanie Gingerich, community development analyst for East Lansing.

These activities include a childcare scholarship program and other public services, Gingerich said.

The ordinance to conditionally rezone 0.55 acres of vacant land at the corner of Grand River Avenue and Delta Street has been before council for months, and the council is expected to make a decision tonight, said Darcy Schmitt, planning and zoning administrator for East Lansing.

The land would be used to build a Residence Inn Hotel as the last piece of the West Village project.

“The council has been discussing it quite a bit and has gotten all the answers they need,” Schmitt said. “At this point they have (probably) discussed all the things they’ve needed to discuss.”
