Protester pleads guilty to arson

September 15, 2008

Marie Jeanette Mason, one of four people charged with setting the 1999 New Year’s Eve fire in Agriculture Hall, pleaded guilty Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids to involvement in the arson.

Reports originally stated that Mason was scheduled to plead guilty Monday.

She was charged with conspiracy to commit arson, aggravated arson and arson.

Her sentencing has not been scheduled.

Another participant in the arson, Frank Brian Ambrose, previously pleaded guilty. He is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 22.

Mason and Ambrose were protesting research on genetically modified organisms when they set fire to the Agriculture Biotechnology Support Project office. The arson caused more than $1 million in damage and took about a year to repair. They each face between 5 years and 20 years in prison.
