Trio of Spartans selected in pro draft

June 8, 2008

Three Spartans were selected in Friday’s MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Junior catcher Kyle Day was selected in the 12th round by the Cincinnati Reds, while the Detroit Tigers picked up junior pitcher Mark Sorensen in the 32nd round and junior utility player Eric Roof in the 46th round.

Day just completed his best season at MSU, batting .320 with a career-high nine home runs and 48 RBIs. In 159 career games, he’s hit 15 home runs and tallied 107 RBIs.

Sorensen was named to the third-team All-Big Ten this season, after finishing 3-6 with a 3.95 ERA. The righty has a career record of 8-12 on the mound, and he was the only regular Big Ten starter who didn’t allow a home run this season.

Roof was a versatile defensive player for MSU this season, starting games at both catcher and third base. Offensively, Roof hit three home runs and posted 33 RBIs.

Over the past four years, seven MSU baseball players have been drafted by major league clubs.

Including Sorensen and Roof, the Tigers have drafted four Spartans in the last three years. Left-handed pitcher Jon Kibler was selected in 2007, and right-handed pitcher Jeffrey Gerbe was selected in 2006.
