Summer gym numbers lower

June 10, 2008

East Lansing resident Amelia Guzman moves during a Zumba exercise class, taught at the Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road.

Spurts of warm weather amidst recent severe storms have allowed for students and East Lansing residents to be outdoors, enjoying and exercising in the sunshine. But the news of clear, warm days aren’t as welcome to the area’s fitness centers and exercise classes, however, as attendance and enrollment lower with the season.

Kathleen Miller, program coordinator for the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road, said numbers of community members involved in the summer are much lower than during the school year. Although the center offers classes from belly dancing to kettlebell training, Miller said community members are exercising elsewhere.

“People don’t like to come in to exercise when they can go on a bike ride outside,” Miller said.

With so many students gone, Richard McNeil, assistant director of the Intramural Sports and Recreative Services department, said IM Sports complexes suffer from a decrease in business.

“The vast majority of our members are students — we sold close to 9,000 memberships for fall and/or spring semesters last year,” McNeil said. “In the summer 90 percent of those members are gone.”

Powerhouse Gym, 4790 S. Hagadorn Road, has seen low attendance as well, said Karri Hobbs, a Lansing resident and MSU graduate.

“Usually the list of available bikes to reserve is full by 8 a.m. Monday,” Hobbs said Tuesday of the gym’s sign-up list for their stationary bikes. “Today all but one bike is going to be empty.”

Kinesiology sophomore Chris Woudstra said he works out in the fitness room of his apartment complex, Collingwood Apartments, 2771 Northwind Drive.

“I’ll probably get another membership at IM (Sports-)West for the school year, but during the summer I work out when I can without having to pay for it,” Woudstra said.

Becky Newcombe, Zumba fitness instructor at the community center, said she hopes to get college students involved in her fall classes. Zumba, a Latin-based cardio dance fitness program that incorporates merengue, salsa and other dance styles is about having fun, she said.

“It’s not like pump-and-jump aerobics,” Newcombe said. “It’s like ‘Dancing with the Stars’ with hip-hop and rock ‘n’ roll.”

Zumba is new to the Hannah Community Center, with its second class offered Tuesday. Though the turnout wasn’t bad, Newcombe said she’d like to see more young people try it.

“It’s a kind of dancing you could actually use when you’re going out,” Newcombe said. “They’re useful moves and I think younger people would love it. They just need to open the door.”
