MSU starting pitcher Mike Monterey allowed six runs in six innings Thursday, as the Spartan baseball team dropped an important game to Indiana, 9-2, at Kobs Field.
Every MSU starter had one hit, but junior Kyle Day produced his team’s only runs with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. The home run cut Indiana’s lead to 3-2, but the Hoosiers responded with five runs in the seventh to build a commanding 8-2 lead.
With the loss, MSU (24-26, 12-15 Big Ten) squandered an opportunity to put pressure on Northwestern (20-25, 13-15 Big Ten), which entered the day percentage points ahead of MSU for sixth place in the conference.
The top six teams make the Big Ten Tournament, and MSU is currently in seventh.
MSU will look for revenge against Indiana during Friday’s doubleheader and Saturday’s regular season finale.
