Redshirt freshman predicts 28-14 victory for veteran-laden White squad

April 17, 2008

It wasn’t trash-talking — senior defensive tackle Justin Kershaw wanted to make that clear — but there’s an air of confidence surrounding the White team as the MSU football team heads into its annual spring game.

And why not? The White team has the whole starting defensive line, senior quarterback Brian Hoyer, and what Kershaw called “some treacherous linebackers.” While the game can be viewed by some as a reward for the players after their practices, Kershaw said once the Spartans get out on the gridiron, it’s time to play hard and fast.

“Oh yeah, that’s how it is every practice, that’s how it is in the spring game and that stuff carries out to the game,” Kershaw said. “You don’t ever want to go out on the football field and take it lightly.”

Although the mind-set heading into the spring game is to treat it like a real game, it’s also a fun way to end the spring practice season. After Tuesday’s practice in Spartan Stadium, the players were visibly excited as they reflected on the day’s work.

Sophomore nose tackle Antonio Jeremiah said while the game will be fun, it’s also a chance for the new guys to get out and show fans and coaches what they’re made of.

“I can’t wait to get out there and play, it’s going to be fun,” Jeremiah said. “Just to show off new talent and stuff like that because there are a lot of guys who didn’t get a lot of playing time last year and now they get to go out there and shine and show what they got in front of everybody.”

Redshirt freshman wide receiver B.J. Cunningham is one of the players who hopes to inspire awe in the Spartan Stadium crowd on Saturday. Cunningham, who admitted he has had his ups and downs during spring practices, said he can’t wait to get out in front of a crowd after spending last season on the scout team.

“(The spring game) gives me experience in front of a crowd. I’ve never played in front of a big crowd before,” Cunningham said. “I know the plays, I just have to loosen up and do my thing.”

If he does his thing and his teammates do theirs, Cunningham thinks the White team will come out victorious, and didn’t hesitate to give a prediction.

“White team, baby,” Cunningham said. “We’ll (win) 28-14.”
