Members of ASMSU have planned for spring elections since last semester, and officials from MSU’s undergraduate student government said they are hoping to increase the number of voters this year. ASMSU Association Director Kara Spencer said 3,627 votes were cast last year and making the voting available to a larger number of students was a goal for this year’s staff. Students can elect representatives for their college beginning at 8 a.m. Monday until April 3 at www.asmsu.msu.edu.
More promotion
Liz Gollubier, ASMSU’s communications director, said the department is throwing out the script that has been used to promote the election.
Low voter turnouts for ASMSU elections in past years have been a problem, and the methods ASMSU has used in the past haven’t generated enough interest, Gollubier said.
The ASMSU-sponsored Anberlin concert will kick off its election week Monday, and Gollubier said 11 laptops will be available for students to cast votes for their respective college representative before the event.
Voting locations will be stationed in high-traffic areas on campus.
Determining leaders
Students voting in this year’s ASMSU election will elect college representatives to serve in the 45th session of Student Assembly and the 17th session of Academic Assembly.
The college representatives comprising each assembly will nominate and elect a chairperson, vice chairperson for external affairs and vice chairperson for internal affairs to lead ASMSU.
Spencer said the new assemblies will be seated about two days after the election results are announced and the first few meetings will be devoted to electing new leadership.
