This in response to the music review by Matt Flint titled From the vault: ‘Sublime’ shouldn’t stand test of time (SN 3/17).
Sublime’s self-titled CD has stood the test of time for the simple reason that the band was ahead of its time. Flint said it himself — the CD has hit songs, the infectious music is fun and the so-called “immature” lyrics are quite relative to the college experience.
In its time, Sublime was a band that had the three-guys-playing-for-beer attitude. The band’s music combines numerous styles and gives the feeling of a Southern California beach party. What more could someone want at a party?
Sublime’s music may have been made in the ’90s but it is not cliché or made specifically for a certain time period. Like Nirvana, Sublime obviously was ahead of its time and made music that can withstand fast-changing trends. Someone who is going to be forgotten 45 seconds after his article is thrown into a recycling bin should not be concerned with how or why a band remains highly popular ? even 12 years after the front man’s death.
