ASMSU meeting in review

February 10, 2008

ASMSU’s Student Assembly allocated $300,000 to fund three concerts later this semester during its meeting Feb. 7.

Two of the concerts are scheduled for the same week in April, while ASMSU will partner with University Activities Board, or UAB, to host the annual Sparty’s Spring Party in late March, said Michael Leahy, Student Assembly chairperson.

ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

iVote

A quarter-million dollars from ASMSU’s risk management will fund the iVote concert, an event that will encourage student-voter registration and recognize student organizations.

Nigel Scarlett, vice chairperson for external affairs, said that the event will be more than a concert, as it will include a fair for student organizations to recruit members.

Scarlett said that ASMSU is looking to bring in two artists from different music genres — hip-hop and contemporary — for the event.

The event is scheduled for April 4 at Breslin Center and will be free for MSU students with valid student identification cards.

ASMSU Elections Concert

Student Assembly approved allocating $40,000 from its special projects fund for another Breslin Center event within the same week of the iVote event.

Leahy said he does not expect the two concerts to compete for attendance.

“The concerts are two different genres of music and have two different end goals,” he said. “They are around the same time, but different genres of music appeal to different types of students.”

The concert will focus on having students participate in ASMSU elections from March 31 through April 3, Leahy said.

Sparty’s Spring Party

Student Assembly approved allocating $10,000 from its special projects fund for Sparty’s Spring Party in late March, Leahy said.

The event draws about 5,000 students each year, according to the ASMSU bill.

Leahy said he could not remember passing more than $300,000 in bills during a meeting this year.

“I think these programs are definitely taking an ambitious approach to put on great events that I think the student body will really enjoy and get a lot out of,” Leahy said.
