Lucas, Neitzel pace Spartans in victory over Buckeyes

January 15, 2008

The MSU men’s basketball team jumped out to an early 23-5 lead against visiting Ohio State and held on for a 66-60 victory.

No. 11 MSU (15-2 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) was led by freshman guard Kalin Lucas and senior guard Drew Neitzel, who tallied 13 points apiece, while senior guard Jamar Butler paced the Buckeyes (12-5, 3-2) with a game-high 21. The win improves the Spartans’ record to 11-0 at home this season.

The Spartans, who came off a road upset at Iowa this past weekend, had nearly as many points at halftime (34) as they did in the entire Iowa contest (36).

Senior center Drew Naymick had a season-high total of 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field.

MSU’s leading scorer, sophomore forward Raymar Morgan, was sidelined for much of the first half with foul trouble and finished with 6 points on the game. His previous lowest scoring output of the season was 10 points.

MSU continues play at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Minnesota.
