Around the Big Ten: Tough opponents ahead for MSU

January 17, 2008

The MSU women’s basketball team is taking their show on the road for two of its next three games. Here’s an inside look at the Spartans’ next three opponents. (Records through Wednesday).

Indiana (10-7 overall, 3-2 Big Ten)

MSU at 2 p.m. Sunday

Hoosiers head coach Felisha Legette-Jack on sophomore guard Jamie Braun, who is Indiana’s lead scorer with 14.3 points per game.

“Jamie Braun is a great 2-guard who has converted to point because we don’t have a true point guard per se. I’m almost beginning to differ that now because she does such a fantastic job of communicating with her team, putting people in place and being what I call a ‘confrontational point guard’ and really moving the ball forward. The last six games she’s been phenomenal. She wants it so bad, and when you get players that are playing your point position that want it as much as your head coach, you’ve got a shot, and Jamie Braun gives us a shot to be a very competitive team in the Big Ten.”

at Illinois (11-5 overall, 3-2 Big Ten)

8 p.m. Jan. 24

Head coach Jolette Law on the Fighting Illini, who are the only team in the Big Ten shooting 80 percent from the free-throw line.

“I feel very confident to know that we can get to the line. We practice on it everyday we shoot free throws, we shoot jump shots and it feels very reassuring as a coach that every one of my players, when they step up to the line, can make it.”

at Minnesota (13-5 overall, 4-2 Big Ten)

1 p.m. Jan. 27

Sophomore forward/center Ashley Ellis-Milan is averaging 10.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Golden Gophers head coach Pam Borton talks about the key attributes it takes to be a successful rebounder.

“It’s just a lot of heart and knowing that’s what your teams needs you to do (and that’s) to be the best rebounder on the team. I think it’s just having a nose for the ball. She goes for every ball and reads it coming off the rim. I think it takes a lot of hard work and heart to be a rebounder, and I think she really takes a lot of pride in it.”
