Virginia Avenue to break ground

October 31, 2007

The Virginia Avenue project will break ground at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the site of the redevelopment.

Virginia Avenue is near the intersection of Hagadorn Road and Burcham Drive.

Also known as the Avondale Square project, the redevelopment calls to demolish the homes on the 600 block of the street and replace them with 30 residential units designed for single families.

Many of the homes Virginia Avenue area are occupied by students.

The new units — comprised of 16 single family homes and 14 condominiums — will range in cost from roughly $160,000-$200,000, said Tim Dempsey, East Lansing’s Community and Economic Development administrator.

Down payment assistance will be provided for families who need it.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Mayor Sam Singh, East Lansing Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David Chapin and other city officials will talk about the redevelopment.

After the ceremony, construction teams will begin working on the redevelopment. The city hopes to complete the project by February.
