Students build Homecoming floats

October 11, 2007

Physics senior Steven Lagana mixes paint with Ajay Nair, a second year horticulture graduate student, to finish the mock apartment for the University Apartments Council of Residents float at the Spartan Stadium on Wednesday.

Using this year’s theme of “Where Heroes are Made,” student organizations created floats for the Homecoming Parade on Friday. Throughout the week, student groups met in the concourse of Spartan Stadium to assemble their floats on top of flatbeds or to create banners. Here are a few examples of what some student groups are doing in honor of Homecoming.

Student Alumni Foundation

Members of the Student Alumni Foundation built a float paying homage to MSU’s mascot, Sparty.

“This year’s motto is ‘Where Heroes are Made.’ We changed it to ‘Where Sparty is Made,’” accounting freshman Sara Seitz said.

The float will feature pieces of Sparty coming down a conveyor belt, leading to a completed Sparty figure coming out of a box at the end.

International Student Association

Members of the International Student Association, MSU’s largest international student group, will carry a banner reading “Go Green. Go White. Go Global.”

President Kaustav Mukherjee said the group is inviting students from all corners of the globe to join them.

“We are emphasizing that MSU is a place where heroes are made and internationalizing the theme,” Mukherjee said.

Tower Guard

The Tower Guard, the group that assists visually impaired students on campus, built a float depicting Beaumont Tower as a superhero. The tower superhero will be shown coming out of the clouds donned in a green and white cape.

“We just wanted to go with the theme,” human biology sophomore Angela Shrestha said.

University Apartments Council of Residence

The University Apartments Council of Residence built a mock apartment building, and its float will feature children from different nations in their native dress.

The nations include Botswana, the United Kingdom, Italy and Romania. The group sponsors Tae Kwon Do and belly dancing programs for children and will feature participants from those groups as well.

“It was kind of a brainstorm. We really wanted to promote diversity and University Apartments,” co-chairman Steven Lagana said.

Their float also will display a banner that reads, “Heroes Help Build Strong Children in the MSU Community.”
