Abbot Road project will start early next year

October 17, 2007

East Lansing city officials will begin working on a project in coming weeks to reconfigure the lanes on Abbot Road between Lake Lansing and Coleman roads.

The estimated cost of the project is $3 million – $2 million of which will be funded by the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The Landings and The Club at Chandler Crossings are adjacent to the area where construction will occur.

The modification involves widening a .82-mile section of Abbot Road from two lanes to four lanes plus a continuous turn lane, and building sidewalks on both sides of the road, said Bob Scheuerman, a senior engineer for the city.

The city will begin wetland mitigation for the project in a couple of weeks, Scheuerman said.

The project’s primary purpose is to lighten the heavy traffic caused by residents in the apartments, Scheuerman said.

Because of the construction, Abbot Road will be reduced to one lane going southbound between Lake Lansing and Coleman roads for up to seven months starting early next year, said Todd Sneathen, East Lansing’s director of Public Works.

During that time, northbound traffic will be detoured to other roads, he added.

The State News could not reach a Capital Area Transportation Authority, or CATA, employee for comment about whether Route 26, which travels up and down Abbot Road, would be adjusted during the project.

Sneathen said CATA is aware of the project, but doesn’t know if any changes will be made.
