MSU Board of Trustees issues

The MSU Board of Trustees will meet for the first time this school year to discuss potential construction projects, bylaw changes and other contract signings. The meeting, to be held at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday on the fourth floor of the Administration Building, was rescheduled due to Rosh Hashanah.

Holden Hall elevator renovation

The Trustee Finance Committee is recommending the board approve a budget of $1 million for elevator replacements at Holden Hall.

Hall director Joshua Gillespie said the replacement is a proactive move so the university won’t be in a situation where the elevators don’t work in a time of need.

“Holden’s one of the newest of the residence halls so the structure is sound and the equipment has worked properly,” he said. “It’s just probably time for it to be changed.”

Erickson Hall restoration

The board will be asked to authorize a larger budget – $2.1 million – to restore the exterior surface of Erickson Hall.

“It will really add to the attractiveness of the building,” said Cassandra Book, associate dean for external relations and student affairs of the College of Education.

The hall, constructed in 1957, has already undergone a series of interior renovations, Book said.

“It’s been a metamorphosis of the building and the ‘community building’ sense of it and the activity level of the place,” Book said. “MSU’s education program has had the rankings of top elementary and secondary education program in the country for 13 years – it ought to be reflected.”

Road construction

Navigating through campus may not get much easier any time soon, as more road projects are being recommended to the board.

There are recommendations for projects on East Circle Drive and Crescent and Middlevale roads, estimated at $3.6 million and $2.3 million, respectively.

“The East Circle project will address safety issues as we have done around campus with the angle parking and not being able to see cars,” said Kathy Lindahl, assistant vice president for finance and operations.
