Banning all firearms would be a 'blind, irrational reaction'

Who could imagine the U.S. with a Complete banning of firearms only solution for gun crimes (SN 9/26) as Shiming Zheng describes as the optimum of safety? Conversely, the opinion he responded to advocated concealed carry permits that would “allow for safe environment.” This is a very divisive issue, that often creates two conflicting ideologies, with very little chance of compromise. Mr. Zheng refers to human emotions, saying they cause us to make irrational decisions. In this case, banning guns completely is an irrational decision based upon an emotional response to violent crime in the U.S.

It would be a difficult autumn in Michigan if firearms as a whole were banned when according to the Department of Natural Resources, 2007 deer hunting prospects forecast, “Deer hunters will contribute more than $500 million to the Michigan economy.” We are already struggling (to put it mildly) fiscally. This loss would be a devastating blow to the economy, and also to local deeply rooted tradition.

It has been shown that people can coexist peacefully with each other, while owning a gun. After all, guns don’t commit crimes, the people holding them do, which is the real problem that needs to be addressed here. Maybe our society is too irresponsible and emotional for ownership of some types of guns, but banning them altogether would be a blind, irrational reaction.
