Columnist needs to approach immigration issue respectfully

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said that illegal immigrants killed 12 Americans daily, not 25. This of course doesn’t make either statistic any better.

We should definitely address the issue of illegal immigration in America, but I don’t think building a wall to keep immigrants out or denying some amnesty will do it. If someone wants to get over that wall, they’ll find a way. These problems have to be talked about in a more constructive and realistic way. We want the illegal immigrants to be assimilated to our culture but what is our culture? America is and has always been multicultural. As far as speaking “our language” – what language is that? Surely it isn’t English, because the Native Americans who first occupied this land didn’t speak English. Some people born in the U.S. don’t speak English as a first language either. Perhaps we as citizens should learn to speak more than the English language.

I would like to know what the fundamentals of our culture are because I’m sure everyone has a different take on that as well. Some illegal immigrants do have jobs here in the U.S., but are they really jobs that we as citizens would want? I don’t think that working in substandard conditions with unrealistic wages of three dollars an hour would appeal to many Americans. Furthermore let us remember that we have home-grown terrorists in our own country. The illegal immigration issue is deeper than the economy or national security; We should treat it as such and not assume that it can be resolved by a simple solution.
