LCC murder case reopened

September 13, 2007

The investigation into the 2005 murder of a Lansing Community College professor was reopened by the Ingham County prosecutor’s office Tuesday.

Claude McCollum, 30, was convicted in Feb. 2006 of the rape and murder of LCC professor Carolyn Kronenberg. He is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

The Ingham County prosecutor’s office could not be reached Wednesday or Thursday regarding the reopening of the investigation.

McCollum is scheduled to appear on Oct. 2 at the Michigan Court of Appeals in Lansing, a court of appeals clerk said.

At that appearance, briefs will be presented to the court panel.

His attorney for the appeal, Peter Ellenson, could not be reached fr comment Wednesday or Thursday.

McCollum’s trial attorney filed for an appeal in May based upon what he believed was a lack of evidence and a misleading conversation between police and McCollum. At the trial, a forensic scientist testified that DNA found under Kronenberg’s fingernails was not a match to McCollum.

Since the trial, McCollum and his family have been critical of the court proceedings and maintained his innocence.

When the suspect of a series of murders similar to that of Kronenberg was arrested last month, McCollum’s family asked for the case to be reopened.

On Jan. 23, 2005, Kronenberg was found dead in her classroom before her class was scheduled to begin.

McCollum was a 27-year-old LCC student at the time of Kronenberg’s death.
