MSU alums' hobby becomes more than a game

A couple of times a semester, roughly 25 MSU students get together to play computer games in a local area network, or LAN, gaming group on campus – allowing them to play with and against each other.

Members of SpartyLANparty, an organization created last spring, also post messages about everything from the latest technology and gaming news to pictures of their gaming systems in online forums.

Although MSU’s computer-networked-gaming student organization has more than 60 users registered on its Web site, don’t expect to recognize many of the students’ names – they operate under aliases while playing.

It’s the first such registered organization, according to recent MSU graduate and co-founder Ehren Benson.

“An alias gives you an identity and people know you by that,” said Mike Goodwin, a telecommunication, information studies and media sophomore , who is known as Kal in the forums of the MSU student group. “The people in the group are great and
