Honoring the U.S. constitution

In honor of the 290th anniversary of the drafting of the United States Constitution, the City Council approved a resolution to declare the week of Sept. 17 “Constitution Week.” The council urges East Lansing residents to participate in the annual “Bells Across America” by ringing a bell at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17.

West Village redevelopment

Council members received information regarding the potential redevelopment of West Village, an area where Valley Court Community Center currently exists, near Grand River Avenue and Abbott Road. Developers are interested in beginning a new phase in the project, which would include about 30 permanent and rental units. Council members will continue to examine the financial feasibility of the project in upcoming weeks.

Virginia Avenue project

The East Lansing Planning Commission handed Mayor Sam Singh an application to construct 30 residential units on 3.39 acres of land along Virginia Avenue between Snyder Road and Burcham Drive. Developers plan to build 16 single-family units, two tri-plex units and two four-plex units.

A public hearing is set for Oct. 2 to discuss the project.

Contract extension

The City Council approved a three-year contract extension for City Attorney Dennis E. McGinty of McGinty, Hitch, Housefield, Person, Yeadon & Anderson, P.C., based out of East Lansing.
