AT&T allows parents to control phone features

September 6, 2007

Concerned parents are the basis for AT&T’s new Smart Limits for Wireless plan.

AT&T drew inspiration from subscribers to produce a plan to accommodate the requests of all parents. The plan lets parents choose which restrictions to apply to their child’s cell phone.

“(Parents) can limit the amount of calls, texts and time of day (their child is able to use their cell phone),” AT&T Michigan spokeswoman Meghan Roskopf said.

The new plan was created in order to eliminate surprise additional charges caused by children downloading ring tones and using too many minutes, Roskopf said. Many parents only buy their children cell phones to use in case of an emergency.

While Roskopf said the plan will work for children, she said she would think differently if she were a teenager.

“I would probably backlash like many children would,” Roskopf said. “I can definitely see children not enjoying (Smart Limits).”

Computer engineering sophomore Sarah Pearson said she would rebel if her parents restricted her cell phone.

“I’d tell (my parents) I’d get my own plan before letting them (activate Smart Limits),” Pearson said.

One aspect of the Smart Limits for Wireless plan that does not sit well with some is its disregard for age. Parents can add the plan if the child is more than 18 years old.

AT&T subscriber and business sophomore Min Lee is glad his parents haven’t placed restrictions on his cell phone.

“It would really bother me because I’m old enough to do stuff by myself,” Lee said.

Not all students are bothered by AT&T’s new plan. Political science and pre-law sophomore Ashley Wenzel said she understands why parents want to monitor their children’s cell phones.

“Technically they probably should be allowed to do that if they’re paying for the phone bill,” Wenzel said.

On the other hand, some parents do not have any doubts about whether the plan is a good idea. Even though Mason resident and mother Geneal Workman’s daughter is too young for a cell phone, she said she is happy that one day she can get her daughter the plan without worrying about unexpected charges.

“It’s every parent’s dream,” Workman said.
