MSU scholar contributes to study of cancer

In fall 2005, Edwin Chen’s mom was diagnosed with the early stages of colon cancer.

A few months later, in December, Chen began his research in the field of cancer biology and infectious disease.

“The emotion was there, but the thing is, the doctor said it was extremely treatable and everything was going to be fine,” said Chen, 21. “But you still can’t deny the fact that it had a huge impact.”

Though Chen’s parents would rather him become a doctor – not a researcher, as well – he said they are supportive of him going to school to get his doctoral degree, along with his medical doctorate.

Chen is working on his master’s degree in physiology at MSU and said that takes up most of his time – about 70 hours a week.
