Attempted murder suspect arraigned

August 6, 2007

The suspect in a local attempted murder case was arraigned Friday at the 55th District Court in Mason.

Daniel Lockhart, 21, of St. Louis, Mich., was charged with assault with the intent to commit murder with weapons involved, weapons felony firearm and home invasion first degree, after a man was seriously injured July 26 at the Carriage Hill East Apartments, north of the Lake Lansing and Hagadorn roads intersection.

The victim, a male, “was in pretty serious condition” and “had multiple gunshot wounds,” said Stuart Dunnings, Ingham County prosecuting attorney.

Lockhart is currently being held at the Ingham County Jail with a bond set at $500,000.

“Mr. Lockhart isn’t going anywhere,” Dunnings said.

Dunnings also said the attempted murder was not a “random act.”

Lockhart requested a court-appointed attorney at his arraignment Friday but will not be assigned an attorney until today or Wednesday, Dunnings said.

As for those who currently live in the apartment and townhouse complex, leasing consultant Kristin Sloan said residents are the business’s first priority.

“Definitely our number one concern is the safety of our residents,” Sloan said.

However, resident Kelly Montgomery said she has yet to be formally notified of the incident by the apartment complex. Montgomery and her roommates didn’t find out about the shooting until late at night July 26 through a news broadcast.

“The thing that really pissed me off is that Carriage Hill didn’t even notify its residents,” the kinesiology senior said. “Needless to say, we’re moving. We are not living here next year.”

Montgomery and her roommates are moving out from the complex in a week, she said.

She also said she believed police were checking on a possible connection between the shooting and a robbery that happened nearby around the same date.

“I never really thought I was living in a bad area,” Montgomery said. “It’s all the more important to watch what you do and be careful.”

Presiding at the arraignment was Judge Rosemarie E. Aquilina, who also will preside at the felony pretrial, set for 2 p.m. Aug.14 at the 55th District Court in Mason, and the preliminary examination, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Aug.16 at the same location.

The possible assistant prosecuting attorney for the case is Kollette Bordeaux, who is currently assigned to the 55th District Court, Dunnings said.
