Nameless student section causes stir

July 30, 2007

As the familiar sights and sounds of Spartan football loom right around the corner, one thing will be different - a newly unified student section without a collective name.

Numerous Facebook.com groups were created in response to merging the two sections, giving students a chance to voice their opinions on topics such as T-shirt designs, cheers and the name of the section.

Dan Stoller, creator of the group "Spartan Football. We have one section, now we need a name!!" and previous Corner Blitz co-director, said he has always wanted a name for the unified student section and said about 90 percent of those who joined the group felt the same way.

"You feel like you're part of the group," the business administration junior said, referring to the idea of a single name for the section. "We also want to be different than the rest of the stadium."

At its largest, Stoller's group had about 670 members who voted the following as their top three names: "Sparta," "Spartan Nation" and "The Phalanx."

However, Ben Adler, a communication and political science junior and creator of the Facebook group, "MSU Students for ONE Student Section Shirt/Color" said it's not a bad thing.

Naming the section has been contentious, Adler said, mainly because some people see a name as potentially divisive.

"If you look across the Big Ten, most big schools and our big rivals don't have a (student section) name," he said. "It's not like basketball. Football is completely different."

Will the absence of a student section name make a difference? Tune in this fall to see.
