Lansing schools offer free meals

July 23, 2007

The Summer Food Program for Children provides free breakfasts and lunches for children ages 18 and under.

The service also is available to people older than 18 who are considered physically or mentally handicapped by a local or state public educational organization.

The Lansing School District and several community organizations have co-sponsored the Summer Food Program for Children throughout the summer, and the program will run until Aug. 16.

The program is funded by the state and has been sponsored in Lansing for more than 20 years.

Each day, the program serves between 1,400 and 1,800 meals.

Several elementary and middle schools and various community organizations in the Lansing area open their doors to provide this service.

"The Lansing School District is delighted to be able to continue its participation in the summer food program because of its importance to families and students alike," said Stephen Serkaian, a spokesman for the district.
