University's presence predates E.L.'s founding

Reading "Aging gracefully" (SN 6/25) made me think about the sesquicentennial MSU recently celebrated.

With the city rebuilding and looking to "revitalize" downtown East Lansing with new residences and businesses aimed at families, I find it odd the city is not doing more to help students.

In terms of pure seniority, the university has been around about 50 years longer than the city, giving clout to the argument that there would be no East Lansing without the university and its student population.

Why, then, is the city dead set on sending the student population packing to faraway locales such as The Village at Chandler Crossings?

Congratulations to the city of East Lansing for making it a whole century. Let us not let the city forget the students of MSU were here long before the East Lansing City Council, and as long as Sparty still stands on the banks of the Red Cedar River, the student population is here to stay.
