Word on the street

April 17, 2007

It's another year, and another crop of seniors are leaving the academic world to dive headfirst into the real world. While some students have plans and jobs lined up, others aren't sure what the future holds. But all the following students interviewed said they were excited to begin the next chapter of their lives.

Are you excited about graduating?

I'm going the victory lap — a fifth year. But I'm a premedical student, and I just took the MCATs, so next year is going to be chill and doing interviews for med schools.

Joe McCollom, physiology senior

Are you excited about graduating?

Yes. I'm very excited to graduate, but it's bittersweet, actually. I'm not from Michigan, so after living here for four years, it's become my home.

Kristen Case, Telecommunication, information studies and media senior

Are you nervous to be in the real world?

I have a job lined up already. There's going to always be the jitters and the real-world factor, but I don't expect to go out and not do well.

James McClelland, accounting graduate student

Are you nervous to be in the real world?

I'm excited and also a little nervous because, as a foreign student, it's my first time getting into the American society. I'm nervous about getting into the American working environment.

Lei Jin, accounting graduate student

Do you have any plans yet?

It's my intention to go to New York ... New York being a literary focal point. It would be ideal to write and publish my own books, but I have somewhat of a realistic approach at the moment.

Jon Sherefkin, English senior
