Catch someone's eye

April 3, 2007
Journalism freshman Irene Stibitz, left, and education junior Nicholas Weigel-Hubler model Oxford shirts from Joseph & Feiss International and Express. The classic shirt has been updated with different collars, new patterns and alternative designs - it can be paired with many types of pants.

Although the Oxford shirt has long been a staple in the corporate world, that's not to say it must be worn with only trousers and a suit jacket — quite the contrary, in fact.

For women, an oversize Oxford can be used as a whole outfit, worn with ballet flats and opaque tights or leggings. Throw on a waist-cinching belt to turn it into an of-the-moment shirt dress, or go without a belt for a tunic-inspired look. Just make sure the shirt covers your butt — this could create an unflattering fashion disaster.

For guys, trends in Oxford shirts include vertical stripes and Western plaid. There are many different styles of collars — such as point collars and longer, '70s-inspired styles. For sleeves, French and barrel cuffs also make Oxfords subtly stylish. Express Men carries similar Oxford shirts for about $54, and Urban Outfitters carries a variety of long-sleeve plaid Oxfords, along with short-sleeve Oxfords, perfect for spring. Most prices hover around $50.
