Students welcome weather

Weekend will mark end of unusually high temperatures

March 15, 2007

With temperatures reaching highs of 73 degrees Tuesday and 59 degrees Wednesday, Spartans across campus took advantage of the spring weather.

"Everybody's happier when it's warmer," child development senior Trista Tacey said. "I went to the Peanut Barrel (Restaurant) and had drinks in between classes."

Other students greeted the weather with a dose of outdoor exercise.

"I went running and walked my dog," earth science senior Josh Vandermeer said.

During the last two days, Vandermeer noticed some changes around campus.

"Clothes came off, everybody starts thinking about summer and no one does homework," he said.

Tacey noticed Spartans taking advantage of the day in a different way.

"Everybody was holding signs saying 'You honk, we drink,'" she said.

"We wanted to drink and celebrate it being nice."

John Kowaleski, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service station in Grand Rapids, said the warmer weather was caused by high pressure in the southeast, which brought warm wind into lower Michigan.

But with the obligations of work and school, not every student got to relish the warm weather.

"I was upset I was working and couldn't do anything," animal science sophomore Mike Marinez said.

For Heather Shafer, a 2006 graduate and on-site manager at an American Cancer Society call center, the temptation to take the day off work caused problems.

"No one came in for work, so I had to call employees because no one decided to work on such a nice day," she said.

However, it appears the warmer temperatures will be short-lived. Temperatures will fall during the weekend, said Bob Suttle, a weather service specialist at the National Weather Service station in Grand Rapids.
