Speaker to discuss Mexican conflict

March 14, 2007

Onesimo Hidalgo will lead a discussion at 6 p.m. today in the Union's Multicultural Center about ongoing issues including indigenous armed resistance to free trade centered in southern Mexico.

Hidalgo is the co-director of the Center for Economic and Political Research for Community Action in Chiapas, Mexico.

"We wanted to get a speaker to come to campus and talk about immigration," said Rigo Lopez, a packaging senior who helped coordinate the event. "Hopefully, he will address the concerns on the back of everyone's minds."

Lopez said Hidalgo will explain how to find peaceful solutions to problems without using violence. Sitting down and working out conflicts verbally is what is being promoted, he said.

"I would encourage people to come and hear (Hidalgo) because this will be an open dialogue rather than a lecture, and give people a chance to ask questions and hear answers," Lopez said.
