SN Style: Dress Codes

February 13, 2007
Journalism freshman Morgan Wilson models one of the many styles of dress that have been introduced for the spring season.

As the infamous New York Fashion Week closes its curtains, the conclusion is clear — the dress is the must-have piece. Designers were smitten with dresses of all colors and patterns, ranging from futuristic metallics (Carmen Marc Valvo) to jewel-toned tweed taffetas (Zac Posen).

Regardless, this fashion trend has been long overlooked. Dresses have been slightly phased out in recent years, in search of the man suit and feminist-inspired cropped trousers. Finally, fashion is back to its glamorous, feminine senses.

The best thing about the dress is that it is undoubtedly the most versatile article of clothing one can wear. The materials are lenient and relatively unbiased for comfort.

Mod looks of both the 1950s and '60s are key right now. Whether you're donning a modern Parisian get up (a la Marc Jacobs), or a vivacious striking minidress (a la Heatherette), the results are bold and eye-catching.

Dresses easily allow you to transform into a world that sweatpants simply cannot. The thought that goes into a dress — matching heels to headband, bag to barrette — can revolutionize even the most serious girl into a playful, classic fashionista.

"The shift" is necessary this spring. The design bears a flowy A-line skirt reminiscent of the fluid pieces worn by swing dancers in the 1920s. The shift is a classic piece that can be worn in the daytime with flats, or dressed up for the evening with T-strap stacked heels. Hidden in the seams are sophisticated pockets, adding a sweeter touch to the dress. Our model is shown here wearing a wild daisy print shift by J. Crew, $170.

Since the weather this time of year is particularly heinous in regard to sheer sheaths, layering your spring dress over a complimenting turtleneck and tights is a voguish way to stay toasty.
