Section stronger through unification

Corner Blitz, best known for its T-shirts and the guy who sits near the back dressed like Jesus, may be disappearing — at least as it is currently known.

And the proposed changes couldn't be better.

For years, Corner Blitz has been the specialty student section of Spartans football; a kind of lower-rent, football Izzone. But the MSU athletics department is considering changes that essentially would make the entire student section like Corner Blitz, complete with matching T-shirts and the whole nine yards.

This would go a long way to make the student section more dynamic and unified.

Other colleges' student sections, such as that of Penn State, have students participate in cheering events like "whiteout," in which every student in the stadium wears a white shirt.

Things like this, on a large scale, go a long way in terms of making the student section look more interesting — and interested in the outcome of the game.

MSU only has had a small taste of that kind of organized student-fan unity.

With the proposed changes, both MSU students and the football team could benefit from a large, cohesive show of support for the team.

After the controversial firing of coach John L. Smith and the tumultuous season that preceded it, a little show of solidarity behind the team and new coach Mark Dantonio could go a long way to help erase the past and put a positive, hopeful spin on the future.

Detractors may complain because the proposed plan may call for the regular price of tickets to jump slightly from $126 and could possibly edge closer to the $150 price tag that Corner Blitz nets.

Any price hike, however, would be negligible, at best. And if the price were to rise to $150, it is unlikely it would exceed that amount. And even at $150, it's a heck of a deal for eight home games and the experience of cheering for your team in a stadium packed with fellow students and fans.

Whatever the feeling may be on the price, one thing is abundantly clear: When it comes to supporting our team, cohesion is key.

Corner Blitz always represented an odd dichotomy between students. It serves no purpose to split the student body into 3,000 fans dressed alike and 10,000 others wearing disparate threads. You've got to admit — 13,000 students all wearing the same thing and cheering on the Spartans would be quite a thing to see.

The proposed changes to the student section could only help, not harm, the current student section. With a new coach and new season on the horizon and fans eager to forget the previous year, why not start next season off strong with a powerful show of support for Spartans football?
