Police briefs 02/28/07

A 21-year-old East Lansing woman with no university affiliation called police Saturday regarding an assault that occurred between 2:30-2:50 a.m. in the courtyard of the Brody Complex, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The woman was working at a local East Lansing business when two men ran away with money from a tip jar. She chased the men across Michigan Avenue to the Brody Complex, south of Butterfield Hall. The woman grabbed one of the men by his hood and attempted to get them to return the tip money, stating she wouldn't call the police if they returned the tips, McGlothian-Taylor said. The men wanted her to release the hood before giving the tips back, and when she did, they ran away with the money again. The woman then pulled out her cell phone to call her manager, and the men returned and tried to take her cell phone. One of the men grabbed her by the elbow and pinned it behind her back while the other man continued to reach for the cell phone. When they realized they couldn't obtain the phone, the men ran. The woman chased them again and lost track of one, but she found the man who pinned her arm back inebriated in the bushes near Emmons Hall, McGlothian-Taylor said. The woman attempted to get to the man's wallet, but the man, who was later identified as a 19-year-old MSU student, began kicking at her. He never hit her. Several men approached the scene to help the woman restrain the man as she called police.Police arrested the student, who was charged with being a minor in possession and taken to an MSU jail cell. The incident is still under investigation, and it is unknown if the woman got the tip money back, McGlothian-Taylor said.Laura Misjak
