Police briefs 02/22/07

A 23-year-old East Lansing man was arraigned Tuesday for fleeing and eluding law enforcement and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, East Lansing police Cpt. Kim Johnson said. Scott Andrew Ruiter drove a green Mercury Cougar that was spotted at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, stopping short and taking off quickly at the light at the corner of Albert Avenue and Abbott Road. When the vehicle hit the curb turning right onto Grand River Avenue, an East Lansing police officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the Cougar sped up onto Michigan Avenue. Speeds reached more than 100 mph, Johnson said. The officer, who had a student from the department's Citizens' Police Academy with him on a ride-along, ended the chase at Frandor Shopping Center. The Cougar continued to speed along Michigan Avenue, when Lansing police picked up on the chase. The vehicle hit a black Mercedes-Benz at the corner of Michigan and Pennsylvania avenues, before hitting bushes and a funeral home. The driver of the Mercedes was pinned in his vehicle and seriously injured and a passenger had minor injuries. They were transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. Ruiter is out of jail on a recognizance bond, Johnson said. Two students reported items worth $3,395 stolen from one of the student's brown 2002 Chevrolet Blazer between 8:30-10:40 p.m. Monday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The female students, 21 and 20, had left the Blazer parked in a lot adjacent to Demonstration Hall on Dem Hall Road to attend ice skating practice. One of the students said she was "almost positive" she locked the vehicle by pressing the lock button on her keychain. The student pressed the unlock button after practice and wasn't sure if she had left the vehicle unlocked, McGlothian-Taylor said. There was no damage to the vehicle. The 21-year-old student reported her $150 Coach purse stolen, containing $200, a $150 pink iPod mini, assorted jewelry worth $150 and a $250 Casio digital camera. The purse was under the back seat of the Blazer. The 20-year-old student reported her $30 backpack missing, which contained a $1,500 Dell laptop computer, a $100 pink iPod mini and $75 worth of textbooks. Also missing was her $100 black soft-side suitcase, which held $100 in cash, $550 of clothing and $40 of makeup.Laura Misjak
