SN Style: Seasonal sweaters

November 7, 2006
Finance senior Abby Caskey, right, and zoology senior Jake Gunn model sweaters for the cold weather.

Sweaters are one of those infrequent fashions that combine style with comfort. This season, indulge in the toasty trend by wearing chunky knits, preppy Fair Isles, sweater dresses, classic cashmeres and more. Bundling up in them just might make walking to 8 a.m. classes in the cold a little bit easier.

Sweater dresses: They're basically the only type of dress women can wear while still staying warm and comfy. Pair a sweater dress with opaque tights and ballet flats or boots. To create a more formfitting look, wrap a wide belt around your waist.

Chunky knits: Probably the warmest sweater of them all, thick knits can be worn in the form of cardigan sweaters, pullover sweaters and sweater dresses. For extra warmth and style, wear them with thick knitted mittens, hats and scarves.

Fair Isle sweaters: These patterned sweaters are especially festive for the holiday months. Men and women can wear them with khakis for a more formal look or with jeans for casual dress. For women, Fair Isle sweaters also can be paired with miniskirts, opaque tights and flats.

Classic sweaters: V-neck and crew-neck pullover sweaters in wool and cashmere have timeless appeal. Whether solid-colored or striped, they can be worn with anything from jeans and khakis to skirts and trousers.

Embellished sweaters: Women can dress up sweaters adorned with beads and metallics by wearing them with formal skirts and dresses. Embellished sweaters can also spice up everyday wear.

Argyle sweaters: Commonly reserved for the studious set, argyle sweaters are classic collegiate wear. In countless colors and styles, argyle patterns are filling retail stores. Wear over a white oxford shirt with slacks or even with just jeans.
