Fields 1st-team All-Big Ten, Cook 2nd-team

November 22, 2006

Senior punter Brandon Fields was named first-team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media Tuesday, and senior offensive lineman Kyle Cook was named second-team All-Big Ten by the coaches.

Fields led the Big Ten in punting yardage average, with 43.3 yards per punt, and also had the longest punt, 73 yards, of All-Big Ten punters.

Fields' selection was his third first-team All-Big Ten award. He also earned first-team honors following his freshman and sophomore seasons. Fields is the first MSU football player to earn three first-team selections since linebacker Percy Snow from 1987-89.

Cook, a captain this season, received All-Big Ten honors for the first time in his career.

Senior defensive lineman Clifton Ryan and freshman kicker Brett Swenson received honorable mentions from the coaches. Ryan, Swenson, Cook, senior wide receiver Kerry Reed and sophomore safety Otis Wiley all received honorable mentions from the media.

Senior quarterback Drew Stanton didn't show up on either poll, but he was named MSU's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
