Granholm articulates better than DeVos

The third gubernatorial debate between Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Republican candidate Dick DeVos brought the beef to the table, but little else.

After criticizing DeVos for using the images of dead children in his campaign-attack commercials, Granholm told the Amway Corp. heir, "If you have beef with me, bring it on," and urged him to "pick on somebody (his) own size."

Granholm was referring to the criticism DeVos has spouted over the deaths of children — including 7-year-old Ricky Holland, whose adoptive mother is on trial for his murder — none of which are in any way her fault.

The debate also touched on the clever Democratic commercial that morphs DeVos' face into President Bush's face. Since DeVos is a big financial backer of Bush, it's not surprising he said the ad isn't insulting — even though the president's latest (and plummeting) approval rating has been in the mid-to high-30s.

Political attacks aside, the third and final debate is over, and we still know nothing about DeVos' plans to improve Michigan. Although he didn't bite at Granholm's beefy bait, he continued with his standard "we need change" rhetoric.

Granholm's Harvard law schooling has done her well — she was clearly more prepared and better versed Monday night, and hopefully her current 8-point lead on DeVos in the polls will translate into votes Nov. 7.
