WHO'S UP?
The Big Ten
Now that Michigan beat Iowa and avoided its last potential roadblock of the season, both U-M and Ohio State are virtual locks to be undefeated when the two teams square off on Nov. 18. But it's not just the perennial powers that are in good shape. Wisconsin is sitting at 7-1 and could very easily finish the season 11-1.
John L. Smith
Ignoring the "How the hell was MSU down 35 points in the first place?" question, Smith may have earned himself another season as head coach of the Green and White after Saturday's historic comeback against Northwestern. Whether you support him or not, it was great to see things break his way for once.
The Big East
The weakest of the BCS conferences takes a lot of heat, but it currently boasts three undefeated teams: Louisville, West Virginia and Rutgers. If one of those teams can finish the season without a loss, its BCS game opponent had better be ready.
WHO'S DOWN?
Charlie Weis
The Notre Dame head coach is complaining about his Fighting Irish squad dropping in the rankings.
Well, it's simple, Chuck. Your team was blown out at home in its biggest game of the season and has an upcoming slate of games against service academies. Shut your yapper, beat Southern Cal at the end of the season and the polls will take care of themselves.
Lloyd Carr
The U-M head coach allowed wide receiver Adrian Arrington to play against Penn State and Iowa despite being arrested because of a domestic dispute on Oct. 13. Say what you want about John L. Smith, but at least he's bringing the hammer down on players who don't keep their noses clean.
The "U"
How far have the mighty fallen? Regardless of suspensions, Miami (Fla.) should never be in danger of losing to Duke, unless Mike Krzyzewski is pacing the sideline and the game is being played at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
